June Jamboree Kayak and Canoe Slalom

Junior Olympic Qualifier Race

The June Jamboree Kayak Slalom and Junior Olympic Qualifier Race, sponsored by the Wildwater Boating Club, will be held as a new race at the Sunnyside kayak and canoe training course downstream from Lamb Street Bridge, Bellefonte, PA, Sunday June 28, 1998. Competitive runs start at 11:00. A special running of the cadet (aged 11-14) girls’ kayak Junior Olympic Qualification runs will be held at 1:30 and 2:00 P.M. Competitors will come from all over Pennsylvania as well as New Hampshire and Washington, D. C.

[ Bellefonte is in north-central PA, about 20 minutes from State College, which is where Penn State is located. --- Rsk ]

This race serves the needs of the persons starting paddling this spring as well as others looking to fill early summer blanks in the schedule. This race complements the other two races at the Bellefonte center, the Dog Days slalom, sponsored by Tussey Mountain Outfitters, to be held on August 23 and the Bellefonte Slalom, Race #5 of the Penn Cup Series, sponsored by the Whitewater Activity Group of the Penn State Outing Club, to be held on October 11.

The specific schedule for the weekend will be as follows: On Sat. June 27 a total of 25 gates will be set. It is expected that in the afternoon there will be free training on the course. Registration will also be held in the afternoon for the race. On Sun. there will again be free training until the paddlers meeting at 10:00. First competitive runs will start at 11:00. The two runs of the special Junior Olympic Qualification class will be held at 1:30 and 2:00. We are allowed to qualify one boat for the forthcoming Junior Olympic 1998 Championships to be held in Richmond, VA on the James River. The special runs will be for a single place cadet girl kayak, aged 11-14. All local and outside girls of this age group are encouraged to enter and race. Race entry fees are $10 per person/class. Late entries on Sunday morning at no penalty will also be taken before the 10:00 meeting. Team race events (three boats to a team) will also be encouraged.
